“Where you go I will go...your people shall be my people…”
The words of Ruth, whose book we read on Shavuot this week, were enough at one time, to make her a convert to Judaism. But today, in Israel, conversion has become a power struggle between the courts, the government, and political parties.
In the wake of to two conversion related rulings last week by the High Court of Justice, one ordering an end to discrimination against non-Orthodox conversion institutes and the other ordering the High Rabbinical Court to explain within 90 days why it annulled all conversions preformed by Rabbi Haim Drukman, the Orthodox and ultra-Orthodox political parties and the Chief Rabbinate are demanding that the government amend the law to make the Chief Rabbinate the only body authorized to deal with matters of conversion in Israel.
